New York Colony 5 Pounds, February 16, 1771

# 1372
Gallaudet Engraved New York Note

Only 6,000 pieces of these Five Pound notes were printed of a 45,000 note emission for all denominations.

Although this example has a couple of small hinge reinforcements on the back, the overall appearance is of a much higher grade. The wonderul engraving remains as bold as new.

The engravings were cut by Elisha Gallaudet, who also made the engravings for the popular NY Water Works notes, February 17, 1776 Continental Currency, and the dies for the 1776 Continental Currency coins. The signatures of Bache and Franklin are bold and complete, whereas the red ink signature of A. Lott and serial number are largely faded.

The image on the right is that of the coat of arms for New York City.
